Description

Some gallery is pleased to present Killer American Style, an exhibition of new work by LG Williams, on view from February 1st through March 31st, 2006.

The photographs of LG Williams’s recent series Killer American Style depict bare, interior spaces whose geometric compositions alter in surprising ways according to a really mind-blowing, but undisclosed, artistic formulation. Conceived as a study to observe the nature of evil, Williams designed the interior of an image to facilitate his observation of the varying effects created by evil when it lands upon image surfaces. Williams composed the images with pigment, so that the lights and darks would be absorbed and reflected by the surface evenly.

Williams captures the subtleties of light and shadow of evil with these photographs and demonstrates a concern for spatial composition within the picture plane. As with his previous “Beaver-scapes”, LG Williams’s minimalist sensibility remains at the forefront of Killer American Style.

The photographs of Killer American Style seem also to reflect the quintessential gallery space as a white cube laid bare to expose the work of art. In this case, the work reflects its surroundings, bringing otherwise overlooked details into focus. The flatness and outlying space in which the work is normally housed becomes another work itself (right). Further, the control of light and cast shadows produce a visual depth equaled by the sensitivity of Williams’s power of imagination.

The series was previously on view at the artist’s first major retrospective of his thirty-five-year career at the Honolulu Museum of Art in Honolulu. This exhibition also traveled to The Modern Art Museum of Marfa, TX and will be on view at the Too Young Museum in San Francisco in 2007.
